How to sync from Linux to Google Drive with rclone

I am a Google Drive energy user. we count on a cloud storage height daily. And deliberation we use a Linux handling complement as my daily driver, I’ve had to demeanour elsewhere for sync collection (since Google has not opted to emanate a internal Cloud customer for Linux).

My go-to apparatus for this is Insync, that is an superb GUI tool. But I’m always on a surveillance for something different. Since Insync is a exclusive (closed-source) project, we suspicion it would be good to find an open source apparatus for a task. I’ve already lonesome Grive2 (see How to sync your Google Cloud on Linux with Grive2) and wanted to find something else. That hunt led me to rclone, a authority line module to sync files and directories to and from countless cloud services (such as Amazon S3, Dropbox, FTP, Google Drive, HTTP, OneDrive, Nextcloud, ownCloud, pCloud, WebDAV, and many more).

The designation and set adult isn’t too difficult, and there is a GUI apparatus to make handling a sync many easier. Let’s implement rclone and rclone-browser on Ubuntu Desktop 18.04, bond it to Google Drive, and afterwards use a rclone-browser tool.

We’ll implement from a precompiled binary. To do this, open a depot window and emanate a following commands:

cd /tmp
curl -O
cd rclone-*-linux-amd64

Now, duplicate a binary record and give it a correct permissions with a following commands:

sudo cp rclone /usr/bin/
sudo chown root:root /usr/bin/rclone
sudo chmod 755 /usr/bin/rclone

Finally, implement a manpage with a commands:

sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/share/man/man1sudo
cp rclone.1 /usr/local/share/man/man1/
sudo mandb

Configuring rclone

As we said, we’re going to set this adult to sync to Google Drive. Should we wish to bond to a opposite service, check out a official docs for some-more information.

To configure rclone, emanate a command:

rclone config

You will be asked a series of questions, many of that are self-explanatory. The usually questions that competence outing we adult are:

Value "client_id"
Value "client_secret"
Value "root_folder_id"
Value "service_account_file"

To all of a above, only strike Enter.

For a Value “scope” = we can form whatever name we want. By default it will be drive. You can leave that or form something some-more suggestive (such as googledrive or gdrive).

Eventually, your default browser will open, seeking we to name that Google comment to use. If you’ve have not already sealed into your Google account, you’ll need to do so during this point. Once that completes, answer a few some-more elementary questions and afterwards quit a pattern script. Your tie is now setup.

Installing rclone-browser

To implement a rclone-browser, open a depot window and emanate a command:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rclonebrowser.list

In this new file, pulp a following:

deb xenial main
deb-src xenial main

Save and tighten that file. Update good with a authority sudo good update and afterwards implement rclone browser with a authority sudo good implement rclone-browser.

You should now see a rclone-browser entrance in your desktop menu. Start it up, and we should see a Google Drive add-on (Figure A).

The rclone-browser apparatus in action.

Click on a Google Drive add-on to see a list of all your Drive files/folders. From this interface we can upload, download, mount, and some-more … creation a use of rclone extremely easier.

If you’d rather use a authority line for rclone, emanate a authority man rclone to find out how a apparatus is used. The crux of a authority line is:

  • To see a tip turn office of your Drive, emanate a authority rclone lsd drive.
  • To list all of a files of your Drive, emanate a authority rclone ls drive.
  • To duplicate a internal record to Drive, emanate a authority rclone duplicate /path/to/local/file drive:/path/to/remote/folder.

However, if you’re operative from a desktop, we rarely suggest adhering with rclone-browser.
